Random Saudi News.....

Hi guys,

My friend sms-ed me yesterday saying the electricity was out and she and her family were sweltering in the hot and humid weather. Jeddah is one of the brightest cities in the world. I am not surprised that power outages occur, although they usually occur in the older parts of the city. This time it was the metropolitan parts of Jeddah that suffered. I liked the attitudes of several people who decided to use the power outage to go to Chuck E. Cheese or Hera Mall. Nice!

Oh, it's never too late to go to school. A 60-year old man in Khamis Mushayt got his high school degree! How cool! To all of you who worry you are graduating at a late age, take some relief in knowing you are not the only one!

How quickly moods can change. From joy to grief as chocolate distributing hosts found out the groom died in a car accident on his way to the wedding. Grim reminder that life is short.

Something is definitely wrong when a beggar makes SR15,000 in a month. These figures might encourage some to leave their regular jobs and start beggary. Of course, they would need some acting lessons to make sad faces and all!

A great article on how young girls may be shocked to see that women do a lot more than they do in Saudi. This particular Saudi girl was shocked to see a maid driving her car. Very important to help young boys and girl broaden their horizons.

A girl refused to go to Africa for summer holidays, leading her mother to believe that her daughter was realizing the importance of money. Instead, the girl wanted to go to Europe or America, leading her mom argue with her! Peer pressure and materialism leads young students with impressionable minds to develop such kinds of attitude.

Why do women need to consult men on everything they do, ranging from education to travel to doing paper work at ministries? I don't know. Maybe you do?

Oh oh...Prince Sultan Bin Salman, secretary general for the Supreme Commission for Tourism has said that "tourism in the Kingdom is unorganized and consequently it needs complete reorganization and a creation of tourist sites to attract tourists." He expects for the tourism industry to pick up in a year or two's time.

How can a mere camel cause damage worth SR2million? By standing in the way of a Chevrolet Caprice, three BMWs, a Toyota Land Cruiser, a Mercedes Benz, a Range Rover and a trailer truck. Amazingly, no one was hurt. The poor camel was left behind while all the drivers and crashed cars left the scene.

All right, I am outta here...have a great day!

UAE Safe from Terrorism

Hello friends,

What a relief! The Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research recently conducted a research and concluded that those countries where there are sectarian and ethnic violence have higher chances of violence. UAE, the study claims, has no such sectarian or ethnic violence, so it is safe from terrorism. However, preventive measures will be taken. The key to a safe country is to maintain moderation in its political and religious policies.

Anyways, too much money has been poured into Dubai now, so should anything happen, Dubai has enough money to recover.

F***! Sh*t! A**hole! B*tch!

Hello guys,

OK, there is one thing I dont do ever in this world. I don't swear. I don't say bad words. I don't shout expletives at anyone. The most common swear words are f***, a**hole sh*t and b*itch. While these words are included in any dictonary and could be used academically as well (f***= sexual intercourse, sh*t= excretement, a**= donkey and b*tch= female dog), they are best known as curse words. I remember when I was in 6th grade, we had to go through masculine and feminine words of animals and the words b*tch and a** would be there too. It did not seem funny then. However, these words have been used endlessly to death today, so much so they have formed a part of our everyday vocabulary. Watching Hollywood movies, these words are used as if it was something these characters learn at school. Meet the Fockers has a baby that says a**hoole cutely, and people find that hilarious. The TV sitcoms fare better because they don't allow for swear words (thankfully enough). Gosh, what I hate the most is how some people use God's name in vain. That ticks me off.

So despite watching movies where swear words are the norms, how come I have never uttered expletives?

Well, to be honest, there have been two occasions where I did shout out loud with a curse word. Hello? You there in the back row...are you all right? Don't be shocked! :-)

In 1993, when I was in 10th grade, I failed one exam very badly. I had spent a lot of time studying for it, and it was a crucial exam. If I did not pass this exam I was not going to go into the next semester. The day I found out the results, and realized I failed, I stayed quiet. I came home, went upstairs quietly, closed the door, locked it and sat on my desk facing the window. SH*T SH*T SH*T SH*T SH*T I shouted out to the window. I was so angry at myself, so much so, I said the curse word! Thankfully, the following week it turned out that I did not fail but passed the exam. So much for my sh*tty words

In 1998, when I was in university in Sharjah, I was becoming frustrated at the people and the university. See, I was the pioneer student and there was nothing on campus apart from dorms and classrooms. Main building was incomplete, no library, no sports complex, no student center, one pathetic cafeteria. After several weeks, I was also getting frustrated with the 10pm curfew. I felt like I was in kindergarten. On top of that the people were very difficult people to converse with. My roommate was a suicidal. So, one fine evening over the weekend, I stared out my window into the empty vast desert (which should have had grass) like a sad person, and shouted out into the air f***, f***, f***, f***. So there. At least I felt better.

So, since then, I have never uttered any curse or swear words. I have never insulted anyone. This is what I tell myself: The same mouth that I use to pray, to thank God, to ask for blessings, should not be the same mouth to utter curses and expletives. There are so many people I know who swear and curse as if it were part of their everyday vocabulary. I am so anti-swear words that I cannot even write them out. I do get angry at times, but I have learnt to not curse or shout at the other person, no matter how much rage there inside me. People should be fined for swearing.

Movie :: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

Hi everyone,

Gooey Chocolate

So I finally saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I remember being excited when it was first announced this movie was being made again. It would be unfair to compare this movie to the one made in 1971 with Gene Wilder playing Willy Wonka. I take the newer version as more faithful to the book and a re-interpretation of the book and not merely a remake of the older movie version.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is about a weird chocolate factory owner, Willy Wonka, who sends out five golden tickets hidden in chocolate bars. Five kids find them, which include Charlie, and they are led inside the factory. One by one, each kid is eliminated and soon Charlie is left with his “prize.” (For detailed synopsis, you can refer to my older post.)

I, for one, have a special affection for this story by Roald Dahl, who wrote among others BFG, The Witches, The Twits, James and the Giant Peach. I also enjoyed reading his Tales of the Unexpected. Dahl’s stories have always been different, wild and extremely imaginative, bordering on fantastical. With Tim Burton as the director, I expected this movie to play a lot with your visual senses. Burton has directed Edward Scissorhands, Planet of the Apes, Big Fish and Batman. His movies have always been fantasy-type and visually rich, with a bit of weird-ness thrown in. Johnny Depp, who plays Willy Wonka, has worked with Burton on four movies. Freddie Highmore, who plays Charlie, worked with Depp on Finding Neverland, which explains for the great chemistry between Willy Wonka and Charlie.

This movie may be mistaken as a pure kiddie movie, but I think adults can enjoy it as much. This movie was like a commentary on the social fabric of our society today. Each of the kids represented a section of the society. Augustus Gloop represents the alarming obesity conditions in kids. Violet Beuaragarde represents the over-competitiveness in small children. Veruca Salt represents the Paris Hiltons of this world. Mike Teavee represents those kids hooked onto television and violent video games. Charlie himself represents, what I would think be a minority, the selfless, near-saint-like kid, who values the family values more than the materialism.

This movie was also internationalized, which the book did not have. We have an anecdote of an Indian prince who wanted a palace made out of chocolate. We see Wonka chocolate bars being exported to Tokyo, London and Cairo. We see chocolates being sold in Japan, Germany and Morocco. When the first flyer is put up in the town, you see Sikhs, Asians, Chinese and others gathering to see the post. There were also so many in-jokes, or references to other movies: namely Psycho and 2001: Space Odyssey. At one point, it almost bordered on near scary as we see one kid being dumped into an incinerator (which we are told is filled with three weeks of trash). It’s venturing beyond the realm of a kiddie movie, as we see another being inflated and yet another being stretched paper thin.

The oompa-loompah, who were depicted correctly here, was played by one Indian actor, who was then digitally cloned to represents 100s others. The older movie had green and orange colored oompah-loompah and seemed scarier. In the new on, this Indian actor plays a jungle chef, newscaster, rock-star and also Doris, the female secretary. The songs he sang were of different styles: bollywood, hippie, funk and rock. I remember the songs in the older version, which may seem tame to the newer version, being more meaningful lyrics wise.

mORE gOOEY cHOCOLATE

There were some extra scenes, which I personally felt slowed down the pace of the movie. These included the flashbacks to reveal more of Wonka’s childhood and his dentist-father, played by Christopher Lee. It dragged the movie down, as we would leave the excitement of the factory to flashbacks. This movie also ventured beyond the elevator “up and out” scene in the book in order to create a fuller story, with the basic theme of how a family support system is integral, which I think will speak to the people in the West as they see their family structure breakdown.

There were some great scenes with Charlie and his two sets of grandparents. The chocolate factory was very imaginatively designed. The Chocolate River set was stupendous. The boat ride in the disco-lit tunnel was amazing. The squirrel, which were all trained, cracking nuts was amazingly done. The glass elevator was fitted with jet engines. There were definitely more pluses than minuses (one glaring problem I had was the reaction of parents while their kids were being eliminated- Why didn’t Veruca’s dad climb over the railing to save her daughter? Why didn’t Augustus’ mom shriek in terror when her son was being sucked into the pipe?)

Depp did a wonderful job acting as Willy Wonka. (Any notion of him being Michael Jackson with that make-up inviting kids into his factory should be dispelled!) He for sure has displayed his versatility (remember The Pirates of the Caribbean?). Charlie brought a lot of innocence, maturity and almost angelic-like into his character. I mean, we know Charlie will be the last one to get the ticket, but after two failed attempts, when he finally does get the ticket, we feel as emotional as he does. The other kids also acted above average. Charlie’s grandparents did a good job too.

Chocolate kisses

In summary, keeping in mind that this movie is coming from the Burton-Depp camp, we can expect to see a weird- fantastical experience into the chocolate factory, all the while learning more about Willy Wonka. A sweet-filled, dee-licious journey that drums home the fact that at the end of day, it is your family that will love and support you the most.

4.5 out of 5.

(I don’t know why but when I came home, I was craving for one of that huge Wonka bars too!)

Hello friends....

Handwritten journal entry

Ahlaaaiin Dubai!!!

Ahlaaaain friends,

Welcome to Dubai. Jo wanted some info on what to do in Dubai, and I will be attempting to give Jo an insider's information on what to do where! Ok, so Dubai has recently been voted by a leading retail magazine as the leading destination for shopping, so I shall start there.

SHOPPING!!

1. City Center- This is the most central place to do your shopping. It includes the hypermarket as well, and you are bound to find something that will fit your budget. I like this mall because it has food courts and restaurants, a good bookshop (Magrudys) and movie theatres.

2. Sharjah Blue Souk- I love this place because if you go the second floor, you can find great bargains on those little artifacts and souvenirs you know you have been meaning to buy your grandmother back home! It's a great haunt, and bargain a lot with the shopkeepers. Don't buy anything like souvenirs from the malls. I bought a camel candle holder, which were being sold in the mall for dhs140, and I got it for dhs30 at the Blue Souk.

3. Ibn Battuta Mall- This is the latest mall to come up in Dubai. It's a nice place to stroll around as the shops are the same. Geant, another hypermarket is also there. This mall also has the imax, but no good movies are being shown on it. The regular cinemas are there. This mall is good for a casual visit. Be prepared to walk a lot though as you go through six different countries.

4. Souk Madinat Jumeirah- A re-creation of an ancient souk, this is nice to experience, but be aware that the prices are quite high for the unsuspecting tourists. Just go there for the experience of it.

(Note: There are other malls as well like Bur Juman and Wafi, but they are exclusive malls, with highly priced boutiques and designer shops. Al Ghurair is a disappointment so don't bother going there. Lamcy is all right- it's entirely Indian, and sometimes you can find good bargains. Other smaller malls are ok, like Reef mall on Murragabat street.)

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES!!!

1. Wadi Bashing- This is a must-do thing if you are in Dubai. Call any tour operator and they shall arrange it for you. This is the closest thing you will come to a roller coaster in Dubai. Riders are frisked away in 4-wheel jeeps out into the desert, where they embark on a dune bashing, whereby the jeeps go up and down on the dunes. It's an adrenaline filled ride. I remember when I went on it, I was screaming on it the whole time mainly because it's so unpredictable and scarily fun!

2. Dinner Creek- Book your dinner for a ride on the creek. I have been with them through Al-Boom Tourist Village, and a dinner on the creek in the evening is a great experience to witness Dubai's skyline and creek.

3. Abra rides- Abras are the water-taxis. You merely pay about 1dhs and you get a ride from Bur Dubai to Deira or the other way. All sorts of people go on this, and is an experience in itself.

4. Beach sports- There are loads of options to do beach-y stuff: diving, snorkelling, surfing, banana boat rides, jet skiing, or just lazying on the beach. Usually the beach front hotels will provide all these facilities though you have to pay an entrance fee. I like mamzar beach, as opposed to Jumeirah beach where you find more sleazy people.

5. Wild Wadi- Bit expensive, but a great day out. It's an awesome water park, with some of the coolest rides in there.

FOOD!!!

1. Automatic- The best lebanese food...nothing can beat this. Cheap, very efficient and always tasty and dee-licious!

2. Goodies- Another lebanese restaurant in Wafi Mall. Make sure you get to sit outside on the balcony for amazing views and experience. Sheesha is also great there.

3. Boardwalk- This is an outdoor restaurant, situated on the creek, opposite City Center mall. The menu is the usual, but its the experience of sitting outside on the creek.

4. Madinat Jumeirah- Several good restaurants. Don't try the Times of Arabia- highly over priced Lebanese. The Meat Co. is awesome.

HOTELS!!!

1. Madinat Jumeirah- Again, a great place to just hang out, have coffee, ice cream or dinner.

2. Grand Hyatt- A city hotel, there are some good restaurants here (Indochine is nice). It's a happening hotel and apparently has the best club in town (The MIX).

3. Royal Mirage- I like this hotel because its in its own world. Peace and serenity are the keywords here. If you want to relax and have a peaceful time, this is it.

EXTRAS!!!

There are loads of cinema multiplexes here, and they all show the same movies! Art galleries and museums are also here. There are areas in old Dubai where you can get good bargains on electronics. There is the Gold Souk. Lots of other smaller stuff. I don't go clubbing so I am not knowledgable on what clubs are nice or not. I only hear from other people.

All right, I hope I covered everything. If you have specific questions, let me know. If you have any particular interest, ask me and I can try to help you more. By the way, I only refer to Time Out Dubai as the essential guide. They are a great guide to what's happening in Dubai. There is another magazine What's On, but that's quite boring. Also, there is a book Dubai Explorer, which is all right too...more handy if you are living here for a longer time.

By the way, I extend out an invitation to you. I am not sure who you are coming with, but it would be awesome if we could meet up for coffee or something!

Incomprehensible...

Hello friends,

Since the attacks in London, all the analysts and experts have been discussing and analyzing the reasons for a group of four people carrying out the attacks. I wathed Nawaf Obaid, the Saudi Security Adviser, on BBC Hardtalk last night, and he gave his reasons as well. People from all angles have been pouring in with their reasons. Some of these include:

* The attacks in London were in retaliation for the attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan
* The people who carried out the attacks were disengaged from society
* These attackers are unemployed, disenfranchised and not yet assimilated into society
* The bombers have been brainwashed by a superior mastermind, probably linked to Al-Qaeda

There are loads of other reasons, and I don't think there is one solid reason, but at the end of the day, it could be several reasons. Now, what I don't understand is why a group of Iraqi insurgents, or whatever you would like to call them, abduct a group of Algerian diplomats and execute them. I don't understand why these insurgents would want to ambush a group of Iraqi men who were returning from police training. Sure, some could argue that this internal kilings between Muslims has been started by the US. As if everything that goes wrong has been started by the US. Do we kill all Muslims who are not with Al-Qaeda? Do we kill innocents whose government support the US and their allies?

What it all boils down to essentially is that Muslims are killing Muslims. Leave all the politics aside and look at it from a human's perspective. It's a Muslim killing another Muslim. I just don't understand this: why would Muslims kill Muslims?

Music Hallucination?

Hi friends,

According to UK's The Evening Standard, listening to MP3 music can cause people "music hallucinations." They conducted a research on about 30 people and they came to the conclusion that people who listen to MP3 music could develop "psychological problems" and experience to hear music in their heads even after closing their iPods. This also known as phantom music, whereby the sounds of the music seems to be real in your head.

I listen to iPod quite frequently and I don't hear any phantom music. I mean, why conduct research on 30 people and then come up with such kinds of statements?

Oh, good news. Etisalat unblocked the Dubai Secret Diary. Apparently there was some confusion, and people bombarded Etisalat with emails and requests forms to unblock the blog. I checked it out, and there was nothing offensive in there that contradicted the social norms and traditions of the country. It's just a regular blog, maintained by a single female UK expat, who writes about her observations of her life in Dubai.

Weighty Issue!

Hi friends,

I just finished watching The Biggest Loser. It’s another twist on the other reality-based shows. A group of overweight people compete each week to lose weight through exercise and dieting. At the end of each week, they have a weigh-in, and the two lowest losers are nominated for elimination. The rest of the group then vote and eliminate one of them. It’s an interesting concept, at least for me it is. I enjoy watching this show immensely because for one, I see these people beyond their physical appearance, and appreciate for who they are on the inside.

I don’t understand why and when it started, but people always have an issue with weight. Sometimes weight is the first thing we see before we see the person. I used to be skinny when I was younger, and I gained weight when I went to the US. I have been gaining and losing weight on and off. I remember gaining quite a lot here in Dubai, so much so, people were asking me what the matter with me was. Thankfully, I managed to get rid of that fat and am at a healthy weight of 92kgs. Before you balk out at the number, keep in mind I am also 6’4”, so my Body Mass Index puts me at the normal weight.

But even I get annoyed sometimes when I meet people after a while, and the first thing they comment on is weight. Before anything else, it has to be my weight (height follows later where people ask me if I have grown taller!) I have seen this happening with other people too. It may be cute one time, but to do it all the time is dangerous. It’s because you are sending out a message to others that before anything else you keep the weight issue in mind.

I can tell you that some people don’t like it when they are being told over and over to lose weight, or gain weight. They get irritated and annoyed, and in some cases develop low-self esteem. I wish people could be more tactful and sensitive the next time they comment someone on their weight. So, remember next time you comment on someone about their weight, put yourself in their shoes. Would you like to be asked all the time about your weight?

By the way, MBC is advertising for an Arabic version of The Biggest Loser. They are looking for over-weight people to participate in their program. Since UAE is fast becoming a country with the highest number of obese children, because of its immobile culture, I think this show will be timely and fun too.

Ok, where's my leftover grilled chicken and mashed potatoes?

Smile kitty kitty kitty!

smile-kitten-large

Hi friends,

I have been meaning to get a kitten in my house. I mean, who can resist a kitten? Even the hardest of hearts can melt looking at a cutesy kitten. Forgive me for sounding so mushy, but I have been really meaning to get a kitten. I will name the kitten 'kit-kat." Typical I know, but come on, it would be cool to have "kit kat" at home and I would be shouting out "KIT KAAAAT! COME GET YOUR FOOD....KITT-EEE KAAAAAT.....PURR PURR PURRRR"

I could have chosen to get a puppy, but some people will not he happy with that decision and I will have to lock the puppy up when those certain people come, or I could choose to not have those people over! Anyways, I don't want dog poop all over my house.

So what's holding me back from getting a kitten? My new leather sofa! I don't want scratches on it. Sure I can get a scratching post, but there is no guarantee that post will save my sofas. Plus, I will be out of the house all day long; will it be safe to leave a kitten at home alone? I will have to leave the AC on the whole time as well (When you live on a budget, things like AC matter!)

On top of that, I will have to bear other expenses as well, cat food, cat litter box, milk, and unexpected medical expenses like neutering and all. Gosh, I really want a kitten. I figured, if I can't get a wife, I might as well get a kitten! Lol!

Homosexuality - My Viewpoint

Hi friends,

(If you are not comfortable with the idea of homosexuality, feel free to ignore this post. To those of you who are referred to my post through your search of 'gays' and 'homosexuals' in Google and Yahoo, will find nothing to arouse you! lol!)

One fine evening, as I enjoying myself at the funfair on Rigga St in Dubai during the Shopping festival, a man approached me and asked me how the scary ride was. I gave him thumbs up. He approached me again with the same question as I got off another scary ride. Again, I gave him thumbs up. I got off the last scary ride, and this man was waiting for me at the gate. This time, as he noticed I was ready to leave the funfair, he asked me if he could treat me out to dinner. Questions ran through my head. He suggested that we could have dinner and then go back to his place for some “fun.”

I had never felt more disgusted in my life before. I pushed him away from me and dashed off quickly away from the complex. I figured out that a homosexual was trying to pick me up. It hit me now that this guy was following me since he first saw me. How could I have not noticed it before? I felt sick in my stomach, so much so, I could not breathe. I was disgusted. I felt horrible. Why did that guy approach me?

Through friends later, I found out that Rigga St. is a popular place for people to pick up prostitutes. It is a street where Russian and Chinese women walk up and down hoping to pick up business. It is also a place where homosexuals hunt for men. While at first I was in denial, my own experience led me to believe my friends. On top of this, after this experience, I went through the same thing twice on the same road. One time, at another location, a taxi driver fondled my leg in the car. I have vowed never to go on Rigga St. again and also I sit at the back of the taxi if I am alone.

My experiences with such men who were aiming to pick me up made me think about them. Are they homosexuals, or as we say more commonly, gays? Are they curious men? Are they men who have been repressed physically that they seek pleasure in other men? Are they men who are away from their families, that they long for physical pleasure? I can assure you, I have also been through places where men try to pick me up in Jeddah, especially at Starbucks.

No doubt that the three monotheistic faiths do not tolerate homosexuality. The Bible and the Quran have the story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, which was full of homosexuals. God does not approve of homosexuality. God created man and woman as part of His design, for the sole purpose of procreation. Man with another man abrupt the design because they cannot procreate.

So, what makes a man homosexual and why are this way? For one, I don’t buy into the idea that the genes, or the DNA makeup, include a gene for homosexuality as advocated by Time and Newsweek magazines years ago. If it were in the genes, the men can then easily say that homosexuality is from God. I am not a scientist and I don’t believe there exists a gene for homosexuality. There could be several other cases.

Cases where young boys are sexually abused/ raped by older men, can cause the victims to develop feelings for men as they grow up. Since the first sexual encounter is with a man, that is what they are exposed to and think sex with a man is fun and pleasure. An abused child develops mixed and confused feelings, and if left un-discussed, will lead the victim to experiment with homosexuality.

Other cases could be where the young boy grows up in a household absent of any male model figure, like a dad or brother. A young boy could develop tendencies to be sensitive, woman-like and thus feel and act like a woman. Which is where another man would seem more attractive as a sexual partner than a woman would.

I also think living in Saudi Arabia and Dubai, where dating is generally frowned upon, and where men and women cannot easily date like they can in the West, men are more likely to find other men to gratify their sexual desires. Isn’t it strange when we see men walking down streets holding hands? They could very well be best buddies, but who would know for sure. What about the labor force who are often here with families and wives back home? Spending excess amounts of time in an all male environment, where they get to depend on one another emotionally, could lead to experimentation with certain physical acts. In a society where men surround men all the time, is there a chance where men develop feelings for other men? Maybe. This argument may be weak because this type of society doesn’t exist in the West yet there are homosexuals rampant there. I know for sure that while the Middle Eastern will not talk about it openly, the homosexuals are rampant here too. It's just another case of "if its not heard of, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist!"

In Dubai, BBC News reported of a nightclub that was shut down in 1998 because a transvestite and gay night was planned. The flyers were leaked and the government authorities found out. Last year, Jules Bar, commonly frequented by gay men, was raided and arrests were made, with many deported. Jumeirah Open Beach is also frequented by gays, and last year too there was a raid at night, which led to the arrests of several men caught in the act. In Saudi Arabia, there has been news on and off of “gay weddings” and “beheadings of gays.”

No doubt I am sickened by homosexuality, but what should my position be? Should I condemn them and not have anything to associate with them? Or should I accept them for who they are in the name of tolerance? I believe in my heart that my position is to be friends with them and not be attacking them and keeping my distance. A good friend helped me passed my Spanish class in Texas, and he was a gay. Another friend helped me in my civil engineering class in university, and he was a gay. Another friend held intellectual talks with me in the dorms and he was gay. I believe I should be friends with them because I have an opportunity to change their lives and their lifestyle, and I can do this out of love, and not out of hatred and hate talk. This has proved successful because one of the friends has managed to change his lifestyle and come to realize that he was gay because of his selfish needs.

I don't think I am talking about anything new here. Everyone knows homosexuals exists amidst us, even here in the Middle East. There is no denying this. I don’t condone homosexuality, far from it, because God does not condone it. It is a disease, and it needs to be erased.

PREVIEW.........

Hi friends,

I don't know how many of you actually read my previous post about me closing down this blog in about a month's time. Jo left a comment for me, and I thought hard about it, and I came to the conclusion that I need to move on and actually close this Life of Mansur blog. Needless to say, I maintain another blog out there somewhere, with a completely different persona, and should you stumble on that one, you shall know its me through subtle clues!

However, as a preview to the story that I will share with you all, here is a song that captivates the nature of the story. It's called Everybody Hurts, by REM.

When your day is long and the night,
The night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough
With this life,
Well hang on

Don't let yourself go,
'Cause everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong
Now it's time to sing along
When your days is night alone,
If you feel like letting go,
When you think you've had too much
Of this life,
Well hang on

Everybody hurts
Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts
Don't throw your hand
Oh, no
Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone,
No, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life,
The days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much
Of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts,
Sometimes everybody cries
And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes
So, hold on, hold on, hold on...

The Amazing Race!

Hi friends,

Some of you may remember of a post I did about reality shows that are suddenly so popular. With a slew of programs like Big Brother, American Idol, Who Wants to Marry A Millionaire, Joe Millionaire, The Simple Life and so on, people have been gripped with watching reality shows. I still feel that with these kind if shows, it is being voyeuristic that people enjoy the most. We get to peek into other people’s live, and witness their emotions and feelings as well as their intimate moments.

I never watched such kind of programs till I was introduced to Big Brother back in 2003. Big Brother was all about contestants being locked up in a house, and was given tasks to perform. At the end of each week, the national public would call and vote off whom they think should leave the show. So each week one contestant would leave. Now, why would anyone want to watch something like this? Why the heck should I care about them? I don’t even know them! Why should I spend my time watching the shows and their insane lives? Believe it or not, I was caught up in the hype, and soon, I started to watch the show with everyone else, right down to the finale.

At the beginning of this year a close friend of mine, who watches American Idol, made me watch it with her. Initially I was not going to watch it, but for her, I did. I just think there is something personal about such kind of shows. You see these people as real people, people with hopes and dreams to become the winner. Yes, it is voyeuristic, but who cares?

I just finished watching The Amazing Race, and this has got to be my all time favorite reality based TV shows. There are teams, made up of two people, who race all over the world to win the prize. Each week, they get a clue and have to go through several clues to reach to the pit stop. The last team to arrive at the pit stop is eliminated. So each week, we lose a team. This show is a lot of fun because it is a cool treasure hunt plus travel plus adventure plus reality show. I find myself screaming out at the team members. I rejoice when the team makes it to the pit stop. I find myself anxious and worrisome when things go wrong. It is a very unpredictable show because sometimes the team in the first place can be the last and the last team can be the first.

The other one I watch is called Murder in Small Town X, in which detectives have to unravel clues in a small town, in which everything is realistically set up, with fake characters and all. It is rather scary at times.

All right, let’s see what else is on TV…

Hooked on to the News!!

Hi friends,

*** News Alert ***
Pictures of four men have been released in London who were thought to have carried explosives onto the public transport system. The bombs were detonated but did not explode. It was a day full of fast developing stories, and the killing of a “south Asian” man at one of the tube station created an almost near chaos situation. A house was raided in Harrow (that’s close to where most of my extended family lives, including my brother and his family!) A Muslim woman was taken away in the police van. The fear is mounting, and there is no peace in knowing that there could be another attack again. As one of my friends wrote in her email to me: “What now? Are we going to have attacks every Thursday in London?”

***News Alert***
President Musharraf of Pakistan gave an interview to ABC News in Pakistan. I am glad for one he has taken a strong stance against the idea that the London bombs have been blamed on Pakistan unfairly. He argued that the four bombers were born and brought up in London. They had been indoctrinated with hate literature in London by these groups, which are not even banned in London. Just because three of the bombers visited Pakistan doesn’t mean that it is Pakistan’s fault. Obviously, the nation of Pakistan is divided clearly into two camps: Anti-Musharraf and Pro-Musharraf.

*** News Alert***
Turkey: a bomb blast blew up a bus, which killed a Briton and an Irish. Others were injured.

***News Alert***
Now, there have been 7 explosions in Sharm el Sheikh, the popular sea resort in Egypt. The resort is frequented heavily by the Britishers and the Russians. In the last 15 minutes the figure for the dead has risen from 36, to 43 to 45. More than a hundred are injured, some very critically.

*** News Alert***
Dubai is a place heavily filled with Britishers and other western expats. If London is targeted, Turkey has been a target and now Sharm el Sheikh, is Dubai on the list of cities to be targeted? I know I may be taking an alarmist attitude here, but I couldn’t help but think of Dubai could be a potential target. Saudi Arabia has had its share of bombings, which drove many expatriates families away from the country. There are bombs being blown in Lebanon. Iraq is a war zone. Will Dubai be a target one day given its high population of westerners?

*** News Alert***
Check out what Katie Benton had to say. Katie and her sister were in the carriage when the bomb blew. She describes the situation vividly, and says that the passengers were “phenomenal” in helping other escape the carriage. However, it was what she said to the terrorist that caught my attention. “Both said they've yet to awaken with self-pity or hatred for the attackers. They see their wounds as "souvenirs" and believe the experience has only served to strengthen their Christian faith and their appreciation for what they have. There's no better way to fight terrorism than to turn what they meant for evil into good and the Lord is certainly capable of that," Katie Benton said.

Almost A Year....!

Hey friends,

On August 20th this year, it will be one year for me to write this blog. Within this one year, I have seen ups and downs. I learnt a lot of new things-- mainly about how easy it is stereotype people and countries and how I should avoid it. I have shared my life with readers out there. I have shared my personal interests and passions. Having said all that, there is a real reason for my writing this blog. I have basically grown a whole lot.

This blog of mine was supposed to be a personal thing. When I first started it, only Xena knew about it. But, as I got into the blogosphere, I discovered great talents out there who maintained their blogs. Soon, comments were being left here, as I left comments there. In a macrocosm way, blogging became a more elaborate form of chatting. I got to know new people who I may never have otherwise. The situation developed such that in my heart, I want to meet all these people who are frequent visitors here.

However, this blog was never planned as a long-term thing. It was a short term thing, and of late, I think I will come to a closure on August 20th 2005. One complete year. It will be a chapter of my life closed. I will move onto other things in my life. It has been a very therapeutic thing for me. I always write in my personal journal by hand, and writing online has been awesome, but does have it's negative aspects (I cannot share taboo topics). Writing always help me look back at my life and see how much progress I have made. Sure, there are bound to be some people out there who will never get to know the real me, and proceed to call me names and all, like a certain Mr. Faraz Rabbani, from Seeker's Digest, who went ahead and called me (plus you commentors) idiots for writing that Burj Al Arab article.

However, leading towards the end of the blog, I will share a story with you, in several parts, that I have been meaning to do so. Something that is personal to me; something that made me grow up fast; something that made me realize how evil this world is; something that makes me want to do something with my life to change this world for the better! Hopefully this story will mark the end of my blog so I can move on.

Watch out for this space as I share this story with you all!

True Love

Hi friends,

An interesting dialogue from a movie Wedding Crashers, of which I will not talk about.

Claire: So what is true love?
John: A soul's recognition of its counterpoint in another's.

Food for thought?

Sun Rising from the West?

Hello friends,

I received this email about the sun rising from the west on the planet Mars. I was skeptical about it, but I checked out some of the articles on the net, and was curious about it. Does anyone know anything about this piece of news. Of course, I go through a lot of skepticism initially (does anyone remember that girl in Oman changed into an animal-- I don't buy that!)

---------------------------------------------

NASA): Sunrise from the West

Get ready, be prepared

The science of astronomy states that the speed of planet Mars has been decreasing in its course toward the eastern direction in the few past weeks to the level we notice the "waver" between the east and the west.. and on Wednesday the 30th of July the planet movement stopped going toward the eastern direction..

Then in the months of August and September...Mars changed its course in the opposite direction to the West- and that until the end of September..which means the sun will rise now from the west on Mars!!

And this weird phenomena of the opposite movement called "Retrograde Motion" Most scientist state that all the planets will go through the same once at least and our planet Earth is one of them. Planet Earth will move in the opposite direction some day and the sun will rise from the west!!

This might occur soon and we are unaware!

The rise of the sun from the west is mentioned in the hadith and this is the major sign of the day of judgment, most if not All, the minor signs have occurred. Wake up.

Our beloved messenger Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) said: "One of the signs of the hour..the sun will rise from the west, where no longer tauba (forgiveness) will be granted" !!
And the strange thing..most of our Shariah scholars mentioned that the rise of the sun from the west occurs only once..on that day..the sun will rise from the west..then again from the east..and continues until Allah wishes..and this is similar to what is happening to Mars..it stops, then it changes its course of direction for a short period of time..then returns to way once it was.
And Abdullah Bin Amro (R.A.) said: (I memorized from the messenger (SAW) a hadith I will never forget..I heard the messenger of Allah (SAW) say: The first aya to come the rise of the sun from the west) [Ahmad]

And the messenger SAW "Allah (SWT) places HIS hand at night to forgive his morning sinners, and places in the morning to forgive his night sinners until the sun rises from the west" [Muslim]

This piece of news is very important as it brings with it a great sign of warning and remembrance of the coming of a new WORLD - the world of the Hereafter And it is also good material for calling others to ALLAH S.w.T . -

whether for Muslims, the unwary of us or the kufar. When we show this hadith that was told 1400 years ago about this miracle..you will see InshaALLAH, a lot will enter this beautiful religion...And the Muslims if they see this phenomena happening in Mars..who knows maybe it would bring them closer to our CREATOR.

May Allah (swt) keep all of us in the Right path and provide us with success in this world as well as in the hereafter.
-------------------------------------------------------

I don't know if this is the truth or not, but apparently this 'retrograde motion' does exist, according to one of many discussion forums talking about this. Let me know if you know any truth about this.

On another smaller note, someone anonymous called me and all the comments on the Burj Al Arab article "idiots." I am prepared to be called an idiot again for this article if it is indeed false. :)

Outer Space...

Hello friends,

One of the things I often wonder about in life is: is there extra-terrestrial life out there? The planet earth is just a tiny speck of dot in a vast Milky Way. We are in such an insignificant place, surrounded by billions of other stars and planets. Is it possible that there would be life in some other planet earth in some other Milky Way? Is it possible that there is some other planet out there that exist without our knowledge? Aliens? Man has not been able to venture beyond even the furthest of what the eye has seen, so there is no clear answer to this.

I don't believe there are aliens out there, because till today, no one has made any contact with any aliens in any forms. There are several conspiracy theories that governments cover-up such kind of information, but I don't believe in any of these so called UFOs, flying saucers, "little green men" and so on. However, I do believe in a world of angels and jinns. They may exist in a parallel universe, but they exist.

Why has God created such a huge, massive expanse of space? Is there some purprose to it? Why in this huge, massive space did God place a tiny planet called Earth and filled it with His creations? I don't know the answers, but here is what I think about it.

1. God is a Creator, and His creations of the Earth, as well as the Sun and the Moon and the stars are a testament to His awesome-ness. It is important to realize that God created Earth for His purpose, and all we know is that we are merely being tested here on this Earth for some larger purpose. As scientists learn more and more about the vast galaxies upon galaxies, it should not take a lot of time for a non-believer to realize that there is a Creator who created all this. Why God is doing this, I do not know, but I also realize that God's understanding is inifinite, while my understanding is finite, so there are bound to be things I will not understand or what God's ways are.

2. God created the moon and the sun for the purpose of creating a system whereby there are days and nights and a solar cycle thereby creating a calendar. Ramadan is ruled by the lunar cycle. The Gregorian calendar is ruled by the solar cycle. So, there are other creations, like the stars, to help the earth. Sun provides light. The orbiting circle provides changes in seasons and weather. Stars have been used by navigators, and maybe some migratory birds use stars as a guide. God has been so precise, the world tilts on its axis at a certain angle. If this angle changes, the weather on this planet will drastically change for the worse.

While it can be daunting to comprehend the minute-ness of human beings on this planet, it is equally amazing to know that God is still a personal God. He created us for His higher purpose, and He still takes a personal interest in His creations, in other words, us! He sent us messengers and prophets. He gave us Scriptures. He provides for us with food and weather. He is the Creator and Sustainer of our lives, even though we may be a tiny speck in this enormous space of galixies upon galaxies.

Egg-Cyclopedia

Hi friends,

This is what I found on the inside of the box the eggs were in.
------------------------------

1. Eggs are considered to be healthy and balanced food group for all age groups
2. Most of an egg’s vitamins are in yolk (yellow)
3. Most of an egg’s proteins and minerals are in albumen (white)
4. The only difference in white and brown eggs is the color of the shell. Nutritionally both are the same. *
5. First eggs layed (sic) by young hens often have double yolks. Some older hens lay jumbo sized eggs which sometimes have double yolks.
6. The best sign of freshness of an egg is that when broken into a pan it would stay firm and would not spread out fast like water.
7. To boil eggs choose 3 to 4 days old eggs. They are easier to peel. *
8. Egg shells are porous hence they should not be stored with products like garlic, apples etc. which have strong odor.
9. It is always advisable to eat thoroughly cooked eggs.

Golden Eggs give you a nutritious feast!
------------------------------------------------------
* Something new I learned today!

So there. I still read labels and other information on packets when I am having breakfast, be it they cereal boxes or milk cartons.

Music:: Starry Starry Night

Hello friends,

A totally bewitching song that captivated me and took me to another world.

JOSH GROBAN "Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)"

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul

Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills

In colours on the snowy linen land
Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds and violet haze

Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colours changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain

Are soothed beneath the artists' loving hand
Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now
For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night

You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you

Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free

They would not listen
They're not listening still
Perhaps they never will...

UAE BLog Blocked!

Hi friends,

Secret Diary Dubai has been blocked here in the UAE. I was not aware of this blog, but apparently it looked at the satirical side of Dubai. It's silly because people from outside Dubai can write about Dubai and have the world read about it. Why block this one particular blog. Will this stop people from changing their perception of Dubai? I don't think so. As the newspaper says, there was a poem written about something, which got disapproving comments. This news article scares me because I wonder how far I can go with my blog. Can I experss my thoughts freely? Am I restricted by the laws here to not go over-board? It's bad enough that the local telecom blocks the publishing of images through Blogger. So much for the freedom of speech. I don't think there ever exists such a thing as freedom of speech. The only place where I can think of freedom of speech is Hyde Park Corner in London, where people get up on boxes and talk about absolutely anything!

Beauty- Skin Deep or Superficial?

Hi friends,

Is beauty really skin-deep? Or is it superficial? I know many have talked about this issue about beauty, and a lot of people talk about how inner beauty is more important and all. They tell us to not worry about the outer appearance and to look at the inside of a person. But I wonder, how can I look at a person’s inner beauty without having to look at the outer appearance?

This program called Extreme Makeover, which I saw on TV tonight, bugged me. The girl in question had an extremely long nose, horrible teeth and flat-less chest. Her mom had been telling her from day one that she is a beautiful person. This girl had her teeth straightened and whitened. She had breasts enlargements. Her nose was re-shaped and some of the excess skin was removed. She claimed at the end of the show that “now I feel beautiful!”

I hate to admit but sometimes, outer appearance makes all the difference. I mean, when you go for job interviews, your appearance is the first thing that will matter. Which is why it is important to dress smart and all. But this looking good thing has been happening since university days for me.

Being architecture students, we had to give presentations every single week and then two major ones at the end of the semester. Apart from the work we presented, looking good was something else that mattered. I can honestly say that those students who did not bother dressing smart did not get very positive reviews, and those who looked smart, got more praise than they deserved. Even I would wear contact lens and wear my finest clothes and shoes. Immediately, the jury would sit up and pay attention. To put this theory to test, I presented one of my midterm presentations in jeans, t-shirt and unshaven face and I was not taken seriously. (I could have done this test more times, but my grades were at stake! Lol!)

Looks do matter in the real world today. Your looks give the first impression to other people. It is a competitive world out there, and as much as I hate to say it, it’s the reality. But, a BIG BUT, looks are not the only thing that matter. Your intelligence also counts. If you have the looks, that’s an added bonus. At the end of the day, it is your intelligence that matters the most.

If you ask any girl out there, they will cite “good looks” as one of the top things they look for in a man. The guys would also say the same thing: “good looks.” There is nothing with that. The problem starts when the “good looks” are the only thing that matters, when it shouldn’t be that way. In fact, even in Islam, beauty is one of the criteria that a man or woman can look for in their potential spouse. So there is nothing wrong with saying that I want a beautiful wife or husband.

So what’s the answer? While I agree inner beauty/ intelligence is what matters ultimately, there is no denying that outer beauty also plays a big part in creating the first impression.

Don't Stare At Me!

Hi friends,

As I was shopping at my local supermarket today, there were two men at the check out counter who were literally staring at me putting my shopping on the conveyer belt. I did not have anything out of this world, just milk and chocolates. They saw my every action and move, as I was lifting things out from the basket to put on the belt. One of them even saw me taking my wallet out and seeing how much money I was giving over. He continued to see till the minute I picked up my bags and left.

Why was he staring? What were his eyes so transfixed on? I don't know.

Staring is the act of "To look directly and fixedly, often with a wide-eyed gaze." Some people can stare at objects and be glues to it till they are snapped out of it. Sometimes people stare at other people. Why do they do it?

I think there are several reasons for it. One is curiosity. When they see someone who is different from them, they like to look at that person and out of curiosity try to figure out who the person is. Which is probably why those two people were looking at me. Another reason may be that the person loves what he is seeing and focuses his/ her eyes on something that has attracted them. The opposite could be true; when we see someone who looks different from us, such as someone who is handicapped, we stare.

No doubt staring is downright rude. Sometimes its an innocent mistake, but otherwise, its absolutely rude. I myself have been in so many places where I feel like people are checking me out by staring. I mean, go to any deserted shopping malls, and you see the shop owners outside at their shops, staring at the customers with such intent.

However, there is something else I do: people-watching, which I consider different from staring. I do this in two places. One at Deira City Center in Dubai. Another is at Mecca, after the 'umrah' when I sit down on the steps and watch the people go by. People-watching is a lot of fun because it is simply amazing to see God's creations, and be in awe of how awesome God is in His designs. Two, it is a lot of fun to try to figure out where the people are from. However, I never let myself stare at people; I always glance over them.

I still don't know why those two men in the supermarket were continuously staring at me. I just know I don't like being stared at. There have been several other instances where I literally had to tell people to stop looking at me. Other instances it turned out they were checking me out. Other cases where they simply wondered where I was from. What do I do when people stare? I smile at them, nod my head. Often that gets them to stop staring. If not, I may wink at them, and if that doesn't work, I actually say out loud "can I help you?"

What do you when you are being stared at? Tell me your techniques, and maybe I can employ your technique! Oi, you, there, on the computer, stop staring at me as I write this article! Lol!

Movie :: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Hi people,

There is a new movie that is going to be out soon called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This movie is based on the book by Roald Dahl of the same name. It was a book that I had read several times in school and one that I immensely enjoyed. There was even a movie made in 1971, starring Gene Wilder. That movie always captured my imagination as I was led through the chocolate factory along with Charlie.

Here's the synopsis. A retiring chocolate factory owner, Willy Wonka, opens up his factory to five kids. All that the kids have to do to get into this awesome chocolate factory is to find a golden ticket in one of the five chocolate bars. Charlie, along with four other kids, find the golden ticket. They get to go inside the secret factory and we are shown how the factory operates-- by the weird oompah loompahs. However, along the way, each of the kids are eliminated in a fun and fashionable way, and we realize Willy Wonka's real intention of having the kids in the factory.

Chocolates and sweets!! Who can resist them? I can't. Which is why I am excited about the new movie, starring the chameleon actor Johnny Depp. Buzz reviews have been positive so far, and it came right onto the number one position in the US box office charts.

Gosh, I can even remember how there would be sweets in Jeddah called Nerds, that were made by the Willy Wonka corporation. There were others as well, such as Runts and so on. I remember one sweet which was like a ball, which you had to chew on, and after a few minutes, the color would change, and there would be several color changes in just one ball.

Ok, all this sweet talk is making me crave for some chocolates. Take care you all!!

Who's To Blame?

Hi friends,

A kids flies off a balcony because he thinks he can fly like Superman! Two kids gun down kids and teacher at a school because they think violence is the answer to their problems! Another two kids burn down a house because Beavis and Butthead from MTV did it! Kids have pre-martial sex because they see Jack and Rose do it in Titanic! Several kids are caught dabbling with witchcraft because Harry Potter does it!

Who is to blame?

One fine evening, over the course of dinner, I got into an argument with a friend who argued that kids watching Titanic would likely emulate the actors on screen and have sex before marriage. I argued that kids today are smarter and not that gullible. The friend was being assertive and she said that I am being naïve and that young kids today, even teenagers, will experiment with sex as a result of being influenced by the movie. I replied to her "I have seen the movie. Do you honestly think I will go pick up the next girl and have sex with her?”

The argument moved onto how violent cartoons and television have become, and how kids are being desensitized and encouraged to be violent in their behavior. She even claimed that Tom and Jerry are violent cartoons and kids should not be shown that at all. I told her that I grew up watching Tom and Jerry, and I am not violent.

Just two days ago, Harry Potter was released, and there are certain groups of people who object to Harry Potter, because they believe it conflicts with their religious beliefs. They argue that kids will indulge in black magic, wizardry and witchcraft as a result of the book. Will kids indulge in such a thing that easily? I don’t think so. Don’t these parents think it is their role to explain to them about the book and the dangers of witchcraft? Shouldn’t these parents keep an open channel with their kids should they have any concerns with the stuff in the book? I am thankful to Harry Potter for one thing that it has encouraged kids to read again. (In this day and age, when every kids wants to spend time in front of the computer or tv, it is rare to see a kid read a book outside of the classroom.)

For some parents, it is easier to blame the media, cartoons, books, Hollywood, video games for corrupting the nature of their children. It’s funny how these parents don’t take the credit for the way their kids behave. There may be loads more of cases out there like the ones I have mentioned at the beginning, and everyone is quick to blame the videos, movies and music. That’s the easy way out and shift the blame.

No one questions the parents. Where were the parents? Were the parents actively involved in their kids’ lives? Were they monitoring whom the kids are hanging out with? Are they keeping a check on where their kids are spending their money? Do the parents provide the kind of atmosphere they should at home? Do the parents depend on the nanny to teach the kids lessons? I am not suggesting that every parent interferes in their kids lives, but at least keep a check on them frequently. It is the role of the parents to monitor what the kids do in their growing ages; to keep a check on what programs they are watching, what materials they are reading, what games they are playing, what their friends are like and so on. (How they should do this calls for another article).

I truly don’t believe that it is merely the movies, music and books only that would encourage the children to act violently. Other factors come into play as well, most importantly the role of the parents. I grew up in a house where my bedtime was 8pm. My elder brother and I were not allowed to watch TV during the week, only on weekend mornings. Sometimes we were allowed to watch one program during a weekday. We never watched Indian movies; only English ones.

It is the way that my parents brought me up that I am the way I am, and I am proud of that!

Fox News-- Forget It!

Hello friends,

While watching the news today, I was furious at Fox News. I just can’t believe how the newscaster on Fox always cut in the people they bring in to talk. These guests, who are Muslims and Arabs, are always cut in, their comments not seriously taken. I just get so riled up and so angry. Someone once said watching Fox News made their blood boil. Well, I also have that same feeling. It was a program called Heartland with Kascich. I was watching this because the host was claiming that while the Pew poll show that support for bin Laden has been dropped dramatically, there are still pockets of people who support and justify suicide bombings: 24% in Indonesia, 30% in Pakistan and 80% in Jordan. The guests were trying to explain the reasons, all the while being cut off from the host as well as getting “yeah, yeah” kind of comments.

The host was dumbstruck at why there are suicide bombings. One of the guest tried to explain about what the US are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan and the host just started to change the topic and tried to carry on with something else. Just when these guests were coming onto something close to exposing the flawed US foreign policy, we get “sorry, that’s all the time we have for now!” from the host. I am not watching Fox News anymore and don’t even get me started on Bill O’Reilly who I nominate as the nastiest host on news, who merely twists other people’s words!

So much for the freedom of press; so much for the freedom of speech!

Screech! Bang! Bang! Bang!

Dear friends,

I am sorry for the delay in my writing. I found it weird for me to not say something on my blog, so here I am today.

I was invited for dinner yesterday by my aunt and uncle who are visiting here in Dubai. It was a Thursday night, and I knew there would be so much traffic from Sharjah to Dubai. I went down out on the street to get a taxi. In this day and age, even the taxi drivers can behave like choosers! They refused to transport me to Dubai. Why? Because the traffic is too much! I did have an issue with one driver several months ago, and I tried hard to keep myself in control this time, to not slam another taxi door that refuses to take me to Dubai.

I finally found one. He was a short, delicate kind of driver. He had a huge beard and wore thick-framed eyeglasses. Initially I spoke to him in Arabic, and it later turned out he was from Pakistan. He did not know where I wanted to go to in Dubai and I told him I would guide him.

So, we made our way out onto the Sharjah-Dubai highway. I was searching for the number of the hotel where I wanted to go. Since the driver knew I was going to a hotel, he said to me ever so bluntly: “You should stop this mobile phone business. You should not even be going to a hotel for naughty stuff.” I was stunned! I was shocked! I was dressed formally for dinner. How dare you think of me like this?! I was so annoyed, but I did not want to pick a fight and so stayed quiet.

Who the heck was this so-called religious guy accusing me of doing “naughty stuff” at a hotel? Who the heck was he to tell me to stop playing on my mobile? Then he asked me if I wanted to listen to the radio, and I said, just listen to what you want to. He put on his tape and it was one of those Islamic teaching tapes, the one where the preacher is shouting to everyone. Great, I thought, now I have to tolerate this. But the worse was yet to come.

This religious driver was so adamant to talk me into being someone like him. He had made it a personal mission to make me more Islamic. I was his sole focus; his project! While on the highway, he changed his lane, and immediately on his left side, the blind spot, was a jeep!

SCREECH!

BANG!

SCREEEECH!! BANG!!

SCREEEEECH!! BANG!!

I thought I was dead. This driver had not looked to his left, and the back part of the taxi screeched against the front of the jeep. Taxi stopped, jeep banged into taxi. Behind the jeep, another car screeched and banged. Behind that, another car. Four-car pile up on the main Sharjah- Dubai highway.

I was already so annoyed at the driver, and now this. I have to get to the dinner. I got out, in the middle of the highway. The driver was refusing to move his car. He was insistent that he would wait for the police. I walked over three lanes to the edge of the highway, risking my life. I finally managed to get another taxi that just happened to be going to Dubai empty.

This is not the first time. Dubai/ Sharjah are cities where there are accidents daily. I myself have been involved in four taxi accidents since I came here in January this year. Traffic is crazy here. Almost makes me not want to apply for the local license and drive on these insane streets. I am happy with my Saudi and International driving license! Give me Jeddah anytime--- I love driving there. *Sigh* The corniche in Jeddah, as well as that Movenpick ice-cream.

Harry Potter "Shocking!"

Hey friends,

Saturday the 16th is the official release date for the 6th installation of the Harry Potter series. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. I honestly have not read any of the books, primarily because I think the main audience are the children, but when I was in London about two year go, I saw so many adults reading it as well, and their book covers looked liked it was for mature adults-- there was none of the characters drawn on the cover.

The release of the new book is expected to create ripples in the publishing industry. It's encouraging because it shows that the art of reading is not dead-- it's still very much alive. I am glad about that. I for one love reading books.

In Indianapolis, two men have managed to get their hands on the new book, which the bookshop had accidentally left out on display. They read the book and they described it as "shocking" in comparison to the previous five books. Harry Potter has received a lot of praise as well condemnation from certain sections of society, in particular the more conservatives and religious-minded people. They claim Harry Potter series encourages children to delve into wizardry and sorcery, practicing black magic and all.

I haven't read the book, nor plan to do so, but Harry Potter is a phenomenon unto itself. Is it suitable for children given its dark nature? Is it meant for children any more? Are children today mature enough to understand that Harry Potter is just a character? Do you think there is something wrong when children all over dress up in wizards and witches outfits, gather at bookshops to purchase the latest books? I don't know the answers but I do know there will be young children here in Dubai who will be all dressed up in outfits on Saturday morning to get the new books.

Haunting....

Hey friends,

The nation of UK observed a two-minute silence today at 12pm GMT. I saw the images on BBC News and the scenes were haunting at the most. The entire nation had stopped doing whatever it was and stood still. All the people just stood still when the clock struck 12. It was a sight to see as it looked something right out of Twilight Zone. Images from around London, Leeds, Belfast and other places showed people still, heads bowed down in respect to honor the dead and wounded in the London attacks. There were people of all background and religion. There were even Muslim students in Leeds who observed the two minutes silence. Those two minutes seemed like the longest two minutes ever.

Ok, so I think it is great that a nation would do something like this. I remember London also did a three minute silence for the tsunami victims.

But what about when 24 Iraqi children die? Don't we have any sympathy for them? Don't get me wrong, I have as much sympathy for those killed in the 9/11 attacks and the London attacks, but I find it a little disturbing when the deaths in London are elevated, with all the memorials and flowers and candles laid out in the open, while the deaths of Iraqis are treated as they were cheap lives. 24 children, some as young as 4 and 5 were killed when a suicide attacker rammed his car into the American humvee around which children were gathered to get candies from the soldiers. I still fail to grasp how a suicide attacker could do something like this. I guess because we see so many senseless deaths in Iraq each day, the initial shock effect has worn off. It should not be this way but unfortunately it has.

Double standards exist in the media. There is nothing new about that. Everyone knows. There is no impartial news channel out there as there are always subtle hints which reinforces their beliefs.

Here is my 2-minute silence for the Iraqi children who were killed......

The Trouble With Love Is....

Hi friends,

The trouble with love is that it is a very powerful emotion. Love is more powerful than hatred. It is sweeter than jealousy. Love transcends all emotions. So why have we deluded ourselves into believing that the world is fast losing love and instead is being filled with hatred and greed?

Thanks to the political situations around the world, it may be very easy to see more instances of hatred, wards, greed, jealousy, envy and so on, and see so little of love. I don’t believe this is the case. Love is actually all around us; we just have to be more aware of it. Just because love is not mentioned in the news, we think love is not there.

Witness a scene from an arrivals lounge at the airport. Don’t you see people hugging and kissing their loved ones? Isn’t that love? Witness a scene of a kid returning home from college. Isn’t that love? Witness a scene when a mother gives birth to a baby. Isn’t that love? Love is present in all personal situations. Witness religious occasions like Eid and Christmas. Isn’t that all about love when family and friends spend time together?

It’s unfortunate the media loves sensationalizing stories that are devoid of any love. Imagine if it were the reverse? Wouldn’t it be awesome?

So why is it that a guy like still cannot say ‘I love you’ to my parents? I don’t know. I guess I have feelings of shyness. My mom always tells me every single time I talk to her on the phone “I love you.” She says that with so much sincerity and love. Why can’t I reciprocate her words? I always end up saying “me too.” I still have yet to say these three powerful words to both my parents. My sister has no problem saying it. Maybe it’s because she is a girl, and I am a guy. Maybe society norms have made us into guys who cannot say I Love You to anyone. Maybe society has led me to believe that saying I Love You is un-manly.

I tell myself every time that the next time I meet my parents I will say I Love You to them. I want to say it because I want to tell them that I appreciate all that they have done for me. Yet, when the time comes, I fail to say it. I hope I don’t come to the point where I wish I had said I Love You to my parents before its too late. I don’t think I will be able to forgive myself.

Friends, Love actually is all around.

PS In case some of you are wondering, I was indeed inspired by the movie Love Actually.

Respecting Public Property....

Hello,

Graffiti on walls advertising mobile phone numbers and email addresses! Scratch marks on cars! Unremovable marks left by kids inside elevators! Littering in public places! People throwing out stuff from cars! People totally disrepectful of public property!

Why can't people respect public property like they respect their homes? Or is it me who thinks I have to keep things clean outside of my home as well? Aren't we supposed to do our part to keep the city clean and respect public property? Why don't more of that?

Zara: My Silent Hero

Dear friends,

I had a really comforting and inspiring dream last night. In the dream I could see myself (no, its not about Astral Projection) standing before someone who was hidden behind a huge rock. I could not see who that someone was but I could feel the presence. It was someone who was so much more powerful than I was. I could see myself get down on my knees and saying stuff that I had been saying for as long as I can remember.

When will my hearing be cured? There are miracles, right? So when will a miracle occur to me? Why did I have to go through all that I did in school? Why did I have to face so much agony and torment? Why did I have to be ridiculed so much? Don’t I have an ounce of goodness in me? Am I really that bad of a person that I get inflicted with a curse like hearing loss? Why do bad things happen to good people?

That was all I could see in my dream: me asking that someone endless questions. I demanded answers but I did not get any. Suddenly, when I least expected it, I heard a voice (a very soothing and calm voice) say to me: “Look around you. You have friends who have worse sufferings than you do.” Then, I heard my dad say to me: “Mansur, people have difficulties and problems. ‘Everyone has them. There is no one who is free of any problems in life.” I remember when he had said this to me earlier when I told him about my friend, who I shall call Zara.

Zara is unable to have children. She has had made three attempts at IV, but all three times it was unsuccessful. She is someone I know from school, and while we were mere teenagers in school, none of us anticipated the problems we would encounter as adults. Although I was aware that Zara could not have kids, it was something that she revealed to me two months ago that made me emotional. She said that she had to have children otherwise she will develop some kind of disease which could be life threatening. The minute she said those words to me, I had tears rolling down my face. Zara, a friend who I know for so long, is in such a position where her life is threatened. Why did she have to go through this?

Zara has shared with me how people can be so tactless and rude with her. Sometimes these people can be innocent, but it alwaysh hurts her. She doesn't like being asked time and again on why she doesnt have kids. She doesnt like being asked about her sudden weigh gain because of her health condition. She is always hurt inside, but she won't show it on the outside. I can relate to Zara because I also don't like being asked the same questions again and again about my hearing aids and so on.

I guess what I am getting to is that while some of us may feel that we are being mis-treated, or mis-judged, we can only look to others who are going through much worse than us, and realize that we are not all that bad. The golden saying: count your blessings, can not be more truer.

People like Zara are what I would call silent heroes. They are suffering from conditions that an average human being doesn’t. They have to make the extra effort to deal with the conditions they have, be it hearing loss or not having kids, and still put on a good face. It takes effort, and I know that because I make the effort to portray myself to people as someone who is like them, and not like someone who has a deficiency. I remember one time back in 1997, when I was working at an advertising firm. One month later, my boss asked me about the “things in my ears” and I explained to him. Immediately the next day, he stopped delegating work to me, and I merely became the “office boy.” I t became obvious, and I quit the company. I let myself lose in the situation. I was weak then. But it is such experiences that made me grow.

I want to dedicate this time to the silent heroes that we know in our lives. I want to appreciate all that they do to go the extra mile to live normal, happy lives. I want to commend them for still smiling, all the while not complaining and showing their problems to the world. I want to say that I am proud of you Zara for not being downtrodden but happy and jovial in life.

Zara, you are my silent hero! The life you live each day is an inspiration to me and makes me live my life to the fullest. Thanks.

My New Phone- Nokia 2650

Hello friends,

I have got my new mobile phone today. I made my decision today after I have skimmed through tons of mobile phone reviews online. I had set my heart on Nokia 2650, of which there are pictures down there on your left side. I got the brown color because I love the brown color. Red is too bright and striking for me, and silver is too common. Almost everyone has a silver phone.

I went into to Fono, gave in my old phone and exchanged it for the new one. The guy was looking at me. "Sir, why are you changing this higherr brand phone with a lower one." You see, I am going from a 7250i down to 2650. It's like being demoted. Being downsized. My new phone has no camera. It has no radio. It has no applications. It has only three games. It has no bluetooth. So, why did I take this phone?

This phone has a very classy and expensive look on the outside. Once opened, it looks like as if it came from outer space. It is a very basic phone and I am happy with that. It allows me to send and receive calls. it allows me to receive and send messages. it allows me to receive multi media messages as well. I don't need the radio because I have my iPod with me. I don't need the bluetooth, because frankly I never used bluetooth since it came into invention and I don't see what I am missing out on. I also don't need the MMS thing because since I paid Dhs30 for registering with the MMS thing, I had sent only two pictures. I rarely used the camera on my phone. Plus I have my digital camera with me anyway. This new phone has a 300 hour battery life. I can personalize it with the many wallpapers and sounds in it. It also vibrates. The coolest thing is that it is a flip-phone. Gosh, I had been meaning to get a flip-phone for the longest of time. I think flip-phones are better than the standard non flip phones. Also, when I receive a message or a call, blue lights go on along the edge of the phone. Ultra-cool.

I cannot wait to go out in public, have someone call me and take my phone out to have people look at me in a weird way using my new phone! No doubt, people will not like my phone. I am anticipating comments like "WHAT? You got a phone with no camera?" kind of talk, which is cool because I prefer simplicity over complexity anyways!

A phone is a phone, and why add all these excess stuff to it? Some of these phones are so sophisticated they look like digital cameras instead! I read somewhere that soon all non-camera phones will be eliminated. I don't think they should that. Yes, you may find it funny that one day back in Saudi I was arguing for the lifting of ban on camera phones in the Kingdom, and here I am, in love with a non-camera phone!

I am so in love with it I want to marry it!

Reader's Request #4: Astral Projection

Astral Projection
Astral Projection
Hi friends,
-----------
Have you all ever had dreams where you supposedly rose out of your sleeping body, hover around the room and maybe even go flying out of your bedroom window? What about the time when you could observe events, or what was happening to you down below, all the while you were floating up above near the ceiling? If you have, you have just atrally projected yourself.
-----------
Honestly, I have had many such dreams. One time, last month actually, I had a complete out-of-body experience, whereby I was flying all over Dubai. At times I was so scared that I might fall atop the Burj al Arab or the Emirates Towers. It was a very surreal experience. I was so glad to woken up in my bed. Out-of-body experience, meditation, lucid dreaming, sleep paralysis are some of the other words used to describe Astral Projection (AP).
-----------
Today I want to tell you about AP. With those of us tuned into the Hollywood movies, Donnie Darko was a movie that explored AP quite effectively. I did not know that such a thing existed till I saw this movie, which by the way is a very intelligent and clever movie, and requires repeated viewing. It's a movie which you will either love or hate, but will certainly get your brains racking for answers.
-----------
So what is AP? Scientifically speaking, AP is when the consciousness of a person has transferred into an astral body (like outer space), which moves free of the physical body in a parallel world known as the astral plane, something like the picture above. During an astral voyage, communication with other projectors or spirits is claimed to be possible. Sometimes the traveler reports being attached to his/her physical body by a silver umbilical cord. Pets have been said to react in a frightened manner, and some claim seeing an astrally projecting person's spirit as a colored beam or shot or light darting around the room. Astral projectors are said to have described details of the outside world whilst in projection that they could not have known beforehand.
----------
In AP you remain attached to your physical body by a silver "umbilical type" cord. Some people see the cord and others do not. You are aware of things you encounter along the way while out of your body. To astral project, as with all out-of-body experiences - one must feel totally relaxed, clothing fitting comfortable, reclining is best. Often a comforter is best over the body as the physical body sometimes gets cold when you travel out.
---------
Here is the fun part, you can actually try to astral project yourself. Astral Projection website has several techniques which you can use to conduct this experiment. They mostly require for you to be free from distractions, your mind clear of thoughts, quiet place and relaxed. For what to do next, you can refer to the website.
----------
While scientists and psychologists have studied AP, they delve into the idea of subconsciousness and physiological aspects of it. Other groups like New Age and the Occult, have their ideas and reasons and support for AP. For more detailed information, you can check out Wikipedia.
----------
Anonymous, I hope this was helpful. I am so tempted to try out the AP techniques, but I would rather do it in the company of my friend. Plus, I always have these dreams where I am flying over cities and towns, and yet see myself sleeping on my bed.

Inta Hindi?

Hello friends,

I am wearing 3/4 beige linen pants (clam-diggers), my university in Texas' tshirt, my baseball cap, my sunglasses and listening to my iPod. I enter this internet cafe, this one being different from the previous one I frequent to. There is a cute lady sitting at the desk. Her name is Faree.

Mansur: (Entering the netcafe) Hello ma'am. How are you?
Cute Lady at desk: (Sleepily) I am fine sir.
Mansur: Are there any computers available?
Cute Lady at desk: (while fidgeting on her computer) Yes, number 5.
Mansur: (with his iPod in his ears!) Number 9?
Cute Lady at desk: No, 5!
Mansur: Oh, 5, ok, thanks.

After checking up on my emails and blogs, I printed out two documents, on which there were two Pakistani names.

Cute Lady at desk: (bringing the printed papers to me) Are you from Pakistan?
Mansur: Yes I am. Are you too?
Cute Lady at desk: Yes
Mansur: Whereabouts?
Cute Lady at desk: Multan.
Mansur: Oh, cool, I am from Lahore
Cute Lady at desk: You know what, you don't look like a Pakistani.
Mansur: Really?
Cute Lady at desk: Yes. You look like an Indian.
Mansur: (offended) Indian? How so?
Cute Lady at desk: You look like someone from Bangalore.
Mansur: (Exasperated) Huh? Where did you come up with Bangalore?
Cute Lady at desk: Well, you look like a really smart person, and Indians from Bangalore are smart people.
Mansur: (Unhappily) Ok, thanks. (All the while, I am fuming inside at yet another person thinking I am Indian!)

Aaaargh! I have had enough of people asking me: are you Hindi? Inta Hindi? What do I need to do to prove to people I am not Indian but a Pakistani? Paint my face green and white, with the crescent and star?
