Movie :: Fanaa (Indian)

Hey friends,

Fanaa (destroyed/ annihilated), the most eagerly awaited movie of the year has been finally released, and I deliberately avoided all reviews/ previews/ music so I could experience the movie without any preconceived notions. (They have already shortlisted Rang De Basanti, Water and Fanaa as the forerunners to the Oscars for best foreign movie)

I cannot tell you how awesome this movie was. For once, I watched an Indian movie that literally kept me at the edge of my seat, which no other movie has managed to evoke out of me.

Story:
Zooni Ali Beg (Kajol) is a Kashmiri girl, and the only child in her family. Zooni, who is a blind woman, has never ventured out of her idyllic home, comes to New Delhi with her aunt and friends for a show which they had prepared for. In Delhi, they are shown around the city by the ever so lively guide Rehan Qadri (Aamir Khan). Zooni, whose mother had always encouraged Zooni to seek out her prince charming, instantly falls in love with Rehan, as the two of them share poetry back and forth. Much to the dislike of her friend, Zooni spends time alone with Rehan. So much in love are they, that Rehan even organizes surgery to restore Zooni’s eyesight.

As soon as Zooni recovers from her surgery, we find her being escorted by the police to the morgue, where she identifies Rehan as one of the victim of the bomb blast at one of the government building. Zooni is left with no choice but to take all the memories of Rehan she has in the brief time they were together.

Meanwhile, the Anti-terrorism unit in India identifies the mastermind behind the bomb blast--- who turns out to be none other than Rehan Qadri himself, or is it?

Seven years later.

Rehan is sent on a mission to infiltrate the Indian army, and trigger off the detonator which threatens to kill thousands of people. He is partly successful in his mission as he faces opposition. During a wild chase on snow mobiles, Rehan is horrifically hurt and stabbed, but he fights back and walks away to seek help.

He comes to a lone house, and knocking on the door brings out Zooni, and a little boy who is also Rehan. It becomes clear to us that this little boy is the child of Rehan and Zooni. But, Zooni doesn’t believe this man at the door is Rehan, and because Rehan went undercover in the army, is wearing a jacket with the name tag of Sanjeev. Zooni, her son and her father all know Rehan as Major Sanjeev.

Only Rehan knows the truth of who he is, and he tries very hard to avoid disclosing himself. But old feeling surfaces, and one powerful scene, where Zooni and Rehan sing old songs to each other, reveals the true identity of Rehan.

What happens next forms the crux of the story. Will they come back together? Will she forgive him? Can she kill her husband, who is also a terrorist? Can you give any sympathy to a terrorist? Should he be killed or spared? Will he fulfill his mission or choose to be with his wife and kid? We don’t know till the very end of the movie.

My Views:
I cannot tell you what a delight it was to watch both Aamir and Kajol perform. I was totally immersed in their story, and never once did it seem like they are acting because they were extremely natural! Power-packed performances from both of them made this movie a worthy one. I was literally on the edge of my seat because I had no idea how the movie would end. Lots of questions, which are answered towards the end, made Fanaa one of the best movie in a long time!

I cannot get over the acting, since the second half of the movie solely focuses on Kajol and Aamir, and one would wonder why these two awesome actors were never paired before. Kajol has proven herself to be an actress of top caliber, and Aamir, as usual, has proven his versatility and acting.

I will stop watching the movie awards show if this movie doesn’t get the acting awards it surely deserves!

I now want the DVD!!

This movie was so good that my movie review doesnt do justice to it. I think I did not do a good job of writing a review for this movie. I guess I was just so over excited that I wrote it in a rush. In any case, this movie is a must see.

Mariam here: hmm...mansur..wow...u really enjoyed it huh? i loved the first part and lafed well thru it. It gradually started to go down hill after that, unfortunately. I'm a big AK fan so not easy for me to admit but...direction became weak after the intermission. The dialogue 'ap Rehan ko utna nai chahte jit na Rehan ap ko chahta hai.' kept repeating and became a sore irritation. They also let him drop his cause too easily. I feel it's a B-/C+! sorry!

hibba,

here in dubai they had arabic subheadings, not english. i know in the uk, english subheadings are mandatory for non-english films. i guess you can wait for the DVD.

hey mariam,

i did truly enjoyed it, considering I dont really watch a lot of indian films in the first place. I was trying to remember what the last one i saw in the theatre was (salaam namaste?)

I must admit though that I am a little biased towards AK, because I know I can expect a good movie from him.

I was blown away by the acting in the second half, especially the scenes in the house. Remember that scene when they are in the kitchen singing old songs-- that was a powerful scene.

Sure there are some flaws here and there, but then, which indian film isnt flawless?

About him giving up his cause to easily, I guess they wanted to show him as someone determined to fulfill his cause, but then is stopped by the very woman he loves. So it's not like the ending of Dil Se where the terrorist gives herself up so easily.

In any case, this was a A-/B+ movie for me, in comparison to the other indian movies that come out.

I was watching the news NDTV and they said that Fanaa is also being considered for the Oscars.

don't be sorry, you are entitled to your opinion! :-)

great! i thought I had finally met a Pakistani who does NOT watch foreign movies from a certain Eastern country......I say this because back in a 2005 blog you claimed that you didn't.

Pakistanis have failed to carve a national identity of their own....when abroad they are more than happy to be dubbed "South Asians" or "Sub-Continent" or "Desi" (especially in the West) and do NOT do anything to try to potray their own national identity. I mean you never hear a British or German person happy to be called "European" do you??!! Europe is a region but national identity takes precedence.

As long as they are hooked on that eastern media, the troubles will continue.

BTW, I am a Pakistani and back in 1989 I undertook a moritorium on anything coming from the eastern alien country: no movie, no TV programs, no nothing......funny how Pakistanis are obsessed and fascinated with a country that always has, does and looks like always will do its level best to hurt Pakistan's interests. They pretend to be friends but you should see them talk amogst themselves.

Just thought I'd drop a line.....so that anyone else who sees this realizes that there are Pakistanis who are not being fooled by those hindi people :)

Pakistan Zinda-Abad!

"Better to have a thousand enemies outside the house than one inside it".

Mansur, quit watching them. Its a 3-hours mujra from what I've heard!

I actually never watched them: but one day in 1989 in Dubai an unsuspecting boy was asked to get into the car by his family for an "outing" and 20 minutes later we were in a drive-in cinema (it was called Rex Drive-In Cinema in Dubai) and so had to endure 3 hours of torture watching some movie from the alien eastern land. It was a terrible experience and I still have flashbacks once in a while! :) Still continue to argue with my family to this day as to WHY and how they like this crap: Zee, Sony, hindi movies.......

Well I can go on for hours about this.....perhaps another time.

thanks for your opinions. i dont go running around watching all movies, except for the ones which i know have the two actors. as of this year, i have seen only two movies from that certain alien land you talked about. if pakistan starts producing better quality movies and tv shows, i will watch them, but the truth is that the state of pakistani tv shows and movies is just pitiful right now. at one time the tv shows were awesome, but somehow over the years the quality has declined.

lets hope they actually start producing better stuff.

ps as for the desi, i would rather be called a south asian than a paki, which i consider derogatory.
